11 Foods You Shouldn’t Keep in the Fridge

Cold storage is a necessity for many foods, but the chilly air of the fridge can have a negative effect on some healthy favorites.

Find out why these 11 foods shouldn’t be kept in the fridge… Putting these foods into the refrigerator won’t cause you any harm (except potatoes); however, it can certainly cause a nuisance for your palate as textures and tastes become ruined.

1. Tomatoes
Tomatoes will lose all their flavor in the fridge. Cold air can turn your tomatoes flesh into mush so store them in the cupboard or even in your fruit bowl instead.

2. Honey
There is no reason to keep honey in the refrigerator and it should be avoided since the cold will make it a solid and it’s always better kept at room temperature.

3. Potatoes
Keeping a potato in the cold temperature of your refrigerator will turn its starch into sugar more quickly. Store your potatoes in a paper bag in a cool, dark place.
The Food Standards Agency has recently released the following statement: “The most important food not to keep in the fridge are potatoes. When these are stored in the fridge, the starch in the potato is converted to sugar. When baked or fried, these sugars combine with the amino acid asparagine and produce the chemical acrylamide, which is thought to be harmful.”
4. Basil
Basil will wilt faster if left in the fridge, and it will also absorb all the smells of the food around it. It’s better to keep it out, sitting in a cup of fresh water, like cut flowers.

5. Apricots, Bananas, Kiwi, Peaches, Plums and Mangoes
These can be kept on the counter until they ripen; they will retain nutrients better, says the Canadian Produce Marketing Association.

6. Bread
The refrigerator dries it out fast. Instead, keep what you’ll eat within four days at room temperature and freeze the rest.

7. Olive Oil
Olive oil should be kept somewhere dark and cool, but when placed in refrigeration, it freezes and becomes similar to butter.

8. Onions
Onions tend to become incredibly mushy or moldy if left in the fridge for too long. The best way to keep onions is in a cool and dry place, outside the fridge.

9. Garlic
Not only will garlic stink the fridge out, it will also make other foods taste like garlic too if kept in the veggie draw. Store your fresh garlic in a cool, dry place.

10. Coffee
It will lose its flavor and actually take on some of the odors in the fridge. You should store coffee in a cool, dark place, where it will retain its flavor and freshness. Freeze large amounts that won’t be used immediately. Wrap it in airtight bags, and store it for up to a month in the freezer.

11. Avocado
If you’re waiting for the avocado to ripen, you should never put it in the fridge. A refrigerator does well by the avocado, but only if it has already ripened and you want to prevent it from going bad.
